ICE OUT
Ice Out on Lake Winnipesauke
Every year, thousands of New Hampshirites around Lake Winnipesauke look forward to the end of winter so they can enjoy the warmth and fun of summer. When the official call comes from Emerson Aviation that "Ice Out" has happened, New Hampshire knows that Lake Winnipesauke is almost ready for summer.
Ice Out on Lake Winnipesauke occurs when all the ice has thawed and broken up after winter. Traditionally, it is declared when the MS Mount Washington can make port at all of her calls: Alton, Weirs Beach, Meredith, Center Harbor, and Wolfeboro.
Our founder, Alan Emerson, loved to share the joy of flight. Several times a day, he would take family, friends, and community members into the skies above New Hampshire's Lakes Region. With a view like that everyday, it's only fitting that by the early 1980s, communities around Lake Winnipesauke trusted Alan to make the official Ice Out call.
Alan's son, Dave Emerson, took up the responsibility to scour Lake Winnipesauke's ports two or three times a day and observe the ice conditions after Alan's passing in 2002. Dave takes his official duty seriously, especially since he knows that there is often some serious money riding on his call.
Our Family Tradition
Listening for the Call
When Dave Emerson has seen enough evidence that the MS Mount Washington can safely make all of her ports, he will officially call Ice Out. The best place to learn when Ice Out is officially called is on our Facebook page.
